Maas, Winy. 2005. "Architecture is a device." In KM3: excursions on capacities, edited by MVRDV, 36-45. Barcelona: Actar.
I interpreted the reading as an acknowledgement to the changing role of architecture in society. No longer is architecture viewed as purely a container for activity. It is rather a catalyst for something more, and as such "should put itself in the middle of the public debate on space". It goes further to explain that architecture has the potential to occupy our lives on a variety of scales. "This collaboration demands a communicative architecture and an architectural language that is direct, de-mystified, understandable and transferable between other domains."
