14 : Final : Carriage

this is my favourite image of the project.

14 : Development : Carriage

In an earlier post I decided that consertina doors were the simplest way to I started by developing the section and then made quick decisions from there - absolutely no time to waste!  The basic carriage design itself is a modified version of the Bombardier Light Rail System.

14 : Final : Station Section

I order to fully convey my approach, I also drew some line drawings with annotations of a short and long section.  My process was to cut the section in sketchup first, and then trace in cad.. and then ifnal touches in illustrator.

14 : Exemplars

Structural principles such as repetition evoke a sense of movement within a design.  I am inspired by the use of materials and spatial arrangements of these projects:

Puerta Umbría High Speed Rail Station / Rafael de La-Hoz Arquitectos / Spain

12 : Tutorial

Here are my scans from the tutorial this week, very messy I know - trying to get whatever was in my head out onto the paper.  I quite like the diagram I finished with and I will use this as my base circulation pattern when organising my programs.

11 : Development : Light Rail

Ok so instead of just posting more light rail examples, i printed out the pictures and drew them instead - this time adding what I wanted to do... I've that in order for me to be the most time efficient with this project, I will only make minor adjustments to a standard light rail design (for example - keep overall 'shell' dimensions the same but adjust interior for adjustable seating / bicycle racks / larger windows / expanding doors etc) and then focus on the design of the woden 'depot' focusing on after hours usage... and how the design of the light rail system can be utilised to provide a public function area... within a 'pavilion' type structure... of which I have yet to design......

I have no idea how I'm going to model this - maybe sketchup?? - I will test it out once I have a solid design? Otherwise I could always do line drawings in cad, and pretty them up in illustrator - similar to BIG Architects graphics. Anyway, here are my sketches for today..

I aim to have a storyboard of my panels by the end of the week so then I will know the exact drawings I need - fingers crossed I can actually pull this off!

Something to leave you with for tonight...

11 : Development : 24-Hour Needs Analysis

So I've gone back a bit towards what I was planning to do along - with a 24-hour needs analysis of how the train is used by the people throughout the day...

Here are some sketchy diagrams I did this morning..

11 : Brainstorm

Last night I was feeling quite overwhelmed, so I called my amazing urban designer, who has become quite the mentor these days, for some direction.

Together we went over some ideas.. some crazy, some boring... some completely unrealistic...

I know that creating a trainline itself is not an 'architectural entity' - but I like that idea for some reason.. so perhaps it can still be utilised somehow... After the chat I decided that maybe instead of focusing on a station... I could focus on where these trains go afterhours...

so during the day the interiors are movable... adapatable so people bring their bicycles on board for longer distances.. and then during the day, seating can be provided for shoppers / seniors / general recreation activities... and then at night time all the carriages can retreat to a 'depot' in Woden Valley for a open public arena, like a public forum, concert hall, night club..... Here are few sketches which eventually led to this point.

In one of the lecture Yasu said that our 'architectural entity needs to assist people to:
-debate political/social/cultural issues
-take actions
-do so through mobile means
-assist the constitutes of A.C.T.

11 : Exemplar : Macro-Micro

Macro Micro isn’t a master plan, but a network of open spaces at macro scale, intensified by micro interventions at particular places. We propose a coherent network based on existing morphology, open spaces structure and landscape qualities. To boost various initiatives we propose to intervene at specific points in the city and the surrounding landscape to stimulate the revitalization process.

We perceive the railway not longer as a rupture in the tissue but exploit it as a landscape continuity: a new generator of urbanity. The different existing open spaces along the railway are connected and form a continuous landscape park. This new continuity intercepts the different transversal corridors and makes it possible to traverse the railway. It becomes an important buffer zone between the city centre and the railway infrastructure. The interventions various from a complete restructuration.
