14 : Development : Carriage

In an earlier post I decided that consertina doors were the simplest way to I started by developing the section and then made quick decisions from there - absolutely no time to waste!  The basic carriage design itself is a modified version of the Bombardier Light Rail System.

14 : Final : Station

Once I had this basic model I was able to develop some sections and small perspectives for the station.  Here are my before and after shots of sketchup > photoshop.

11 : Development : Light Rail

Ok so instead of just posting more light rail examples, i printed out the pictures and drew them instead - this time adding what I wanted to do... I've that in order for me to be the most time efficient with this project, I will only make minor adjustments to a standard light rail design (for example - keep overall 'shell' dimensions the same but adjust interior for adjustable seating / bicycle racks / larger windows / expanding doors etc) and then focus on the design of the woden 'depot' focusing on after hours usage... and how the design of the light rail system can be utilised to provide a public function area... within a 'pavilion' type structure... of which I have yet to design......

I have no idea how I'm going to model this - maybe sketchup?? - I will test it out once I have a solid design? Otherwise I could always do line drawings in cad, and pretty them up in illustrator - similar to BIG Architects graphics. Anyway, here are my sketches for today..

I aim to have a storyboard of my panels by the end of the week so then I will know the exact drawings I need - fingers crossed I can actually pull this off!

Something to leave you with for tonight...

11 : Research : Train Interior

I stumbled upon this design competition where people proposed future train design concepts.

Here are some of my favourites, which have got me thinking about how the light rail could be designed:

YOYO: What if we think of the interior of a train as a space that is totally open and only a absolute necessary number of seats are placed. An invisible number of seats keep the space as opened and unidvided as possible. What if we think of it as a space where density only depends on the number of the traveling passengers and the seat itself has different capabilities and can do things a fixed rigid structure could not do.

PANOTRAM: The project is an advanced design of anelectric tramway – which I like to call the Panotram. There is a strong need to a tramway that will bring together peoples and their environment.
The uniqueness of the tramway is the combined configurations which include closed internal niches and patios that one enjoys while riding the tramway. The innovation of the Panotram is a new integrated experience in which the passengers enjoy a relaxing ride either in the cabin of the train or outside in its patios.

11 : Development : 24-Hour Needs Analysis

So I've gone back a bit towards what I was planning to do along - with a 24-hour needs analysis of how the train is used by the people throughout the day...

Here are some sketchy diagrams I did this morning..

10 : Research : Loop City by Big

Really liking these diagrams, I hope to practice something like this for the presentation:

10 : Research : Loop City by BIG

I've always loved BIG Architects, they have an amazing style, particularly in their graphics and presentation of complex information.  They tend to really love creating videos also, which is what drew me to this project called 'LOOP CITY' with was developed for the 2010 Venice Bienale.

LOOP City is a master plan for the suburbs of Copenhagen, Denmark centered around an expansive new light rail system that instead of just being a way for people to get around, will actually act as a catalyst to develop the surrounding communities. Conceived by BIG Architects, the transportation loop will feature an undulating rail line with peaks at each station. In addition to acting as "an artery of true urbanity, pumping life into the heart of the suburbs," the project will also incorporate strategies for energy efficiency, waste management, and water treatmentInstead of just providing transportation for the area, the loop will harbor development for the cross border region, allowing different programs to grow around the new stations. ”At certain points the rail becomes a building itself almost like a Roman aqueduct passing through the suburbs,” says BIG of the project. “At other points it forms small pockets of urbanity around the stations.”
